Open Call

An open call for EASTWARDS, a nomadic residency across Eastern Mongolia’s steppe (Khentii–Dornod–Buir Lake–Menen), inviting 10–15 artists to engage with art, ecology, and spatial awareness through a mobile, collective journey from July 20 to August 1, 2026.

MENEN.jpg

From the mountains of Khentii to the vast plains of Dornod, through Buir Lake and into the Great Menen Steppe, this residency unfolds as a moving journey across the landscapes, philosophies, and living culture of Eastern Mongolia.

Traveling toward the East — toward sunrise, beginnings, and origins — participants will encounter nomadic lifeways, immense open grasslands, and the ecological atmosphere of one of the world’s last great steppe regions.

The residency invites artists to slow down, observe, listen, and rethink artistic practice through movement, landscape, silence, and collective experience. The steppe becomes a studio, a research site, and a space of reflection.

Participants are encouraged to engage through observation, writing, sound, image-making, conversation, performance, research, and site-responsive practice. More than finished outcomes, the residency values openness, curiosity, sensitivity, and the desire to experience the journey deeply.

OiR Art Hub operates independently through artist-led collaboration and collective organization. At this stage, participants are responsible for their international travel costs to and from Mongolia.

Participation Fee: 1000 USD

We understand that financial circumstances vary widely among artists internationally. A limited number of reduced-fee places may be considered for emerging artists or participants with financial need.

We are also happy to provide invitation letters and supporting documents for participants applying to external funding bodies, cultural organizations, universities, or grant programs in their home countries.

The fee includes:

Airport pick-up and drop-off

Transportation throughout the residency journey

Food and accommodation during the trip

Organization and residency coordination

Visits to local art communities and artist studios

City tours and exhibition visits in Ulaanbaatar

Participation in the final group exhibition in Ulaanbaatar

Accommodation conditions will vary throughout the journey. Participants may stay in tents, nomadic yurts, guesthouses, or tourist camps, depending on location and travel conditions. The residency emphasizes shared experience, mobility, and collective engagement over comfort or institutional formality.

Artists, researchers, creatives, and anyone interested in art, ecology, landscape, and nomadic culture are welcome to apply.

To apply, please send:

Your portfolio, website, or social media

A project proposal, idea, or simple statement of interest

Or simply a personal note explaining why you would like to join the journey

Enthusiasm, openness, and genuine interest in the experience matter more than polished applications.

JAVAR International Art Residency 2026

The first edition of OiR Art Hub Mongolia’s winter residency took place from February 25 to March 1, 2026, on the frozen shores of Khuvsgul Lake. Mongolian and international artists explored javar and frost as metaphors for resilience and inner renewal, creating works shaped by extreme winter landscapes. Public programs, workshops, and lectures in Ulaanbaatar extended the dialogue on contemporary art, ecology, and cultural exchange. A full documentary will be released in April 2026.

Everything in Flow — Solo Exhibition by Zultsetseg Narantsogt

We invite you to visit the solo exhibition by Zultsetseg Narantsogt, a founding member of OiR Art Hub. At Lham Gallery till 7th April 2026.

Titled “Everything in Flow,” the exhibition draws attention not to outward appearances, but to the inner rhythm, quiet endurance, and the invisible flow of life unfolding within.

Her works are not confined to fixed representation. Instead, they express a continuous flow of perception, space, and thought. The imagery embedded in each piece gradually shifts the viewer’s focus away from the external world, inviting us to sense the inner rhythm, the passage of time, and the ever-present invisible currents that move through life.

2025 Highlights

We are pleased to announce the successful realization of two exhibitions in 2025: “Transformation”, a solo exhibition by Batchimeg Bayaraa, presented as part of the Ulaanbaatar Biennale 2025, and “Earth is ‘A’ Story We Inherit”, a solo exhibition by Chrisel Attewell.

Both exhibitions were physically held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and are now also accessible online.

While the digital platforms provide a valuable opportunity to revisit and share the works globally, we warmly encourage audiences to experience the exhibitions in person, as the physical encounter with the artworks remains incomparable.

OiR ART HUB – International Residency Program & Essence Performance Art Project Successfully Conclude Summer 2025 in Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia — August 2025 — OiR Art Hub is pleased to announce the successful completion of its International Residency Program and the Essence Performance Art Project during July and August 2025. Both initiatives continue to strengthen Mongolia’s role as a platform for intercultural dialogue, artistic innovation, and creative exchange.

This summer, OiR Art Hub welcomed Chrisel Attewell as our international artist-in-residence. Her residency in Mongolia opened new opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration and artistic research, bridging landscapes and narratives from the Southern Hemisphere to the steppes of Central Asia.

During the residency program, OiR Art Hub organized a series of creative activities together with guest artist Chrisel Attewell, including:

  • Essence Performance Art Camp – Mandal Camp, Tuv aimag
A week-long artistic retreat where Mongolian and international artists explored performance in dialogue with nature, exchanging ideas and practices in an immersive environment.

  • Art Program at the Yanzaga Children’s Camp
Interactive workshops and activities are designed to inspire creativity among children, encouraging them to engage with art as a tool for imagination, play, and self-expression.

  • Art and Nature Discovery Trip
A performance-based research journey with local nomads and Japanese tourists, highlighting the profound relationship between people, nature, and artistic expression.

  • “Far and Wide” Intercultural Presentation and Dialogue
An open talk and presentation by Attewell, sharing insights about the African and Southern Hemisphere art worlds — their evolution, artists, and deep connections to land and history.

  • “Earth is a Story We Inherit” Solo Exhibition
A culminating presentation of Attewell’s works created and developed in Mongolia, South Africa, India, and Turkey, weaving together themes of land, memory, and human connection to the natural world.

The Essence Performance Art Project, now in its second year, continues to foster dynamic collaboration between Mongolian and international artists, offering a vital platform for experimentation, performance, and cultural development.

Celebrating creativity through performance, the project embraces the beauty of nature and the nomadic spirit across the breathtaking landscapes of Mongolia. Here, freedom thrives in the vast steppes, majestic mountains, and endless deserts. Artists dance and perform as if intricately woven into the fabric of the universe, deeply connected to this earth. In every movement, they recognize Mother Earth’s consciousness, reflected in her elements, energy, and the vast expanse of creation. Their expressions resonate with the rhythm of nature, celebrating the profound bond we share with the world around us.

This year’s participants of the Essence Performance Art Project included Aurélie Cornaz (Switzerland), Chrisel Attewell (South Africa), Munkh-Erdene Munkhzorih (Mongolia), and Ulziibat Enkhtur (Mongolia).

With these programs, OiR Art Hub reaffirms its commitment to cultivating international artistic exchange, supporting emerging and established artists, and contributing to Mongolia’s growing presence in the global contemporary art scene.
